Sundin, 11, is now the No. 1 skier in her age group according to the New Jersey Ski Racing Association. She will be part of a team representing the state at the Francis Piche Invitational in Gunstock, N.H., on Saturday.

“I like the feel of skiing,” said Sundin, a Morristown resident. “I like going down the course and hitting the gates, and the speed. . . . I have no fear. I like speed.”

Sundin finished first in the J-5 race by more than two seconds at her home hill, Campgaw, on Jan. 28. She also won at Mountain Creek on Feb. 27 and finished third there the following day.

Sundin trains four days a week for about 18 hours total. She also plays on two lacrosse teams, as well as competing in field hockey, gymnastics, tennis and summer swimming. A fifth-grader at Thomas Jefferson School, she hopes to become a kindergarten teacher or stockbroker, while still coaching skiing and lacrosse.

Sundin hopes to finish in the top 20 at the invitational this year, moving up from 50th last winter — when she was ranked second in New Jersey.
